Bordetella/Kennel Cough & Your Pet

This is a contract between Walkin’ Paws Flint (hereinafter called “Provider”) and the pet owner whose signature appears below (hereinafter called “Owner”).

What is Bordetella?

Bordetella, commonly called Kennel cough, also known as infectious tracheobronchitis, is a general term for a group of viruses and bacteria that cause upper respiratory infections in dogs. These diseases are highly contagious between dogs, but generally cannot be spread to other species, like humans or cats.

How can my dog get bordetella?

Your dog can contract Bordetella by breathing in the airborne bacteria if they are sharing the same general area with a dog carrying the disease. Additionally, Bordetella can be contracted by your dog sharing a food bowl or toy with a dog that is carrying the disease. Symptoms can appear between 2 and 14 days after your pet has been exposed to the bacteria. The typical length of infection can be anywhere from 4 to 21 days.

What are common symptoms of bordetella?

Most frequently seen are dogs with a dry, hacking cough and/or a runny nose. The cough may be severe enough to cause retching or vomiting in some dogs. In severe cases, kennel cough may progress to pneumonia. If this occurs, dogs may run a fever, lose their appetite, and become depressed.

What should I do if my dog is showing signs of bordetella?

If your dog shows the signs of Bordetella, you should contact your veterinarian immediately. While the Bordetella disease is an otherwise healthy dog is not itself life threatening, other pre-existing health issues with the pet can cause serious health complications in a pet that contracts Bordetella. In the meantime, avoiding dog parks, grooming salons, and highly populated canine areas is crucial.

What can pet owners do to reduce the risk for bordetella?

You can reduce the risk of your dog contracting Bordetella by ensuring that the dog’s Bordetella Vaccination is up-to-date. While many veterinarians recommend that your pet receive the vaccination on an annual basis, there is almost 100% agreement among veterinarians that dogs that frequent a boarding, grooming or daycare environment should be vaccinated on 6-month internals to reduce the risk of contracting the disease. Walkin’ Paws In-Home Dog Boarding recommends you vaccinate your pet every 6 months.

Will the vaccine stop my dog from getting bordetella?

While ensuring that your dog’s Bordetella Vaccine is updated on 6-month intervals will certainly reduce the risk of the pet contracting the disease, studies have shown that the vaccine is only 70% to 85% effective at preventing your dog from contracting Bordetella. Additionally, while the intranasal version of the vaccine has been shown to be the most effective version of vaccinating for the disease, immunity can require up to 72 hours from the time the vaccine was administered and does not protect from every cause of Bordetella. The resulting immunity is often short-lived (4 to 6 months in duration) so re-vaccination on similar intervals if recommended.

Why is Bordetella so common in shelters or boarding facilities?

Stressed, unvaccinated animals living in close quarters are most susceptible to infections. Hence the reason we require updated, valid vaccine records.

What is Walkin’ Paws Flint In-Home Dog Boarding doing to keep your pet(s) safe while on premises?

Walkin’ Paws Flint requires an updated, valid copy of vaccine records for all pets who come into premises. Canines who live in the home full time are completely up to date on all vaccinations, as well as examined by our veterinarian twice annual for health checks. Our daily cleaning schedule and disinfecting routine between client stays ensure a clean, healthy space for your pet(s) to stay.

Low Stress Introduction Protocol

Walkin’ Paws takes pride in providing an all-around safe and comfortable experience for our guests. In order to provide that experience for everyone our Low Stress Protocol is in place to be followed by all guests who stay on premises. We appreciate your flexibility and willingness to follow our protocol.

When a new pet comes for their introductory day, their day will be spent one on one with one of our staff members. During that time, they will learn our home, play and adventure the different sniff spots in the backyard, as well as being tested in a private suite to ensure a peaceful night’s sleep. For most dogs, new environments can be scary, overly exciting, and/or stressful; these types of emotions can cause out of character behavior for certain dogs. Because of this, during your pup’s introductory day HE/SHE WILL NOT JOIN IN GROUP PLAY; Nose to nose introductions may occur depending on pup’s behavior. This is set up per all of the safety of all guests on premises as well as the comfortability of your pet during their first day with us.

In our private suites, your pet will have access to food and water via coop cups, unlimited water and normal feedings will apply. Each suite has barriers protecting visitation of their neighbors so your pet can rest peacefully at night, by themselves or with their siblings! Our dog room is temperature controlled, cozy full of sound machines and night lights to ease your pups night as well.

Each guest will be catered to via their individual needs, our staff on site has experience caring for puppies under the age of one, special needs pups, skittish and/or timid pups, advanced senior issues, leash pullers, excessive markers, mounters and jumpers, poorly mannered dogs, administering medications, administering injections, caring for livestock, as well as exotic animal ownership.

WE DO NOT ALLOW DOG AGGRESSIVE PET(S) ON PREMISES.
